Ljubljana, the capital with the green soul

Did you know that Ljubljana proudly holds the title of the European Green Capital 2016, one of the world’s most sustainable destinations? Ljubljana was ranked on the list of global top 100 sustainable destinations for the third time.

Most notable reasons for receiving such an awards are: environmental awareness amongst its citizens, sustainability strategy 'Vision 2025', implementation of a range of urban green measures over the past decade and its impressive transportation network.

For the motives above, Ljubljana is becoming known among the people for the green soul. Throughout the city you can find excellently preserved green spaces, exercise stations under the shade of trees, picturesque embankments of the Ljubljanica river, designed by the architect Jože Plečnik, and one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe.

On top of everything, Ljubljana area boasts with four nature parks. One of them covers the area of the Rožnik and Šišenski hrib hills and Ljubljana's most beautiful park, Tivoli, which stretches right into the city centre and is the starting point for all the paths crossing the two hills. The longest paths lead all the way to Ljubljana Zoo and, across the way from it, the Mostec forest. The per capita green space provision in Ljubljana stands at 542 square meters. Can you imagine? In Ljubljana it's possible.

Maybe what you still do not know and you will be surprised, is the circular recreational route of 34 kilometres called the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship that runs along the route of the fence of barbed wire that surrounded Ljubljana during the Second World War. Along the route you will find more than 7000 trees along.

To finish, we must not forget to name The Ljubljana Marshes Nature Park, situated on the southern edge of the city, boasts several archaeological sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Apart from that, it is well-known for its extraordinary biodiversity and as one of the few surviving natural ecosystems of its kind in Europe.

As you can see there are many reasons to visit Ljubljana if you are a nature lover. So, what are you waiting for?
