Art Royal – Master Drawings from the Louvre

Paris – Salzburg: The world-famous Louvre makes a guest appearance at the Salzburg Museum

As part of the Festival Exhibition 2017, around 80 drawings from the world-famous Louvre will be on display at the Salzburg Museum.

These pieces are actually sketches that were brought together by German businessman and collector Everhard Jabach. He lived in Paris in the 17th century. The ”Sun King” Louis XIV was so excited by the works that he ultimately bought up Jabach’s collection. With 5,542 sketches in total, it became the foundation of the “Département des Arts graphiques du Louvre”, and thus represents an early chapter in the history of the Louvre’s collecting activities.

The exhibition casts a spotlight on hand sketching in the Baroque. Amongst the works we find those by Michelangelo, Raphael as well as Rubens.
