Fern areas

Bela Krajina is land of white birch trees and eagle fern undergrowth called steljniki. These areas, once pastures where people raked leaves and scythed undergrowth, are now one of the most picturesque features of Bela Krajina that was even named after the white trunks of birch trees (Bela means white in Slovene). The most beautiful fern areas are found in Vinomer near Metlika and in the vicinity of Marindol, a village south of Adlešiči, and are both protected sites.
